Training Opportunities for Deaf People Many non-Deaf people don't understand that English is not the first language of the Deaf Community. The Deaf Project works to support Deaf people in becoming assertive and self-confident with courses like 'Advocacy' and 'Speaking Up' offered in partnership with Exeter Council for Voluntary Service (Exeter CVS). Through training Deaf people will have the confidence to represent their community in accessing non-Deaf society. One of Living Options' Trustees, Jean Thorpe, says communication is a two way problem. Because this is true, the project is working to train Deaf people to deliver Deaf Awareness and Basic Sign Language courses. We believe native BSL signers are best qualified to teach BSL and we want to equip them to do so. If you are Deaf, live in Devon and want to become a Community Representative or tutor, please contact us for more information. |
