Kristy Cooper - Deaf Project Coordinator
|
Kristy was born profoundly Deaf. She was brought up orally. There are many times where she gets so frustrated in trying to understand what people are saying, lip-reading is not always easy. Not understanding conversations most of the time encouraged her to become more successful throughout her career and life. Kristy went to Exeter Royal Academy for Education at 14. It was one of the best things that happened to her. It was there that she learnt sign language. Sign language is where people communicate by using their hands along with body language and facial expressions. It was her 'second home', having real friends and a proper education where she ended up with 7 GCSEs. On leaving school, she went to Exeter College to study Business Studies for two years. Later, she became passionate about drama; she achieved BA Hons in Theatre at Dartington College of Art. Kristy is Deaf Project Coordinator, her role is to raise awareness of local service providers and voluntary and private organisations in relation to Deaf people's needs. Information relaying and consultation are an important part in establishing continuing partnerships and new partnerships. British Sign Language is an integral part of her life and to have total communication gives meaning to her life. |
