BSL and Deaf Awareness Courses for non-Deaf people

Basic BSL (British Sign Language)

This six week course teaches basic signs for daily communication.  We believe immersion is the best learning environment.  Each session is two hours per week.  At the end of the course students will:

  • fingerspell
  • ask and answer simple questions
  • perform basic introductions
  • identify people and relationships
  • identify colours and use numbers
  • identify days of the week and months
  • tell the time
  • understand basic placement

Deaf Awareness

70,000 Deaf people live and work in the UK today.  The workshops focus on issues and opportunities in the Deaf Community and introduce Deaf culture.  Topics and exercises include:

  • lipreading awareness
  • group discussion describing the Deaf community
  • Deaf culture and community
  • equipment and technology
  • booking and working with interpreters
