Disability Equality Training - Programme Outline

Duration: 3 hours including a 15 minute refreshment break

Through creative hands-on exercises, true scenarios and thought-provoking discussion time, the course covers such topics as changing attitudes and perceptions, improving communication, appropriate language, access issues and awareness of the DDA. It is packed with useful tips and advice which help highlight personal responsibilities and prevent discrimination. The course is interactive and injected with humour and personal experiences that help to promote disabled people as individuals, each with their own individual needs.

  • Introduction
    Trainer and delegate introductions
    Ground rules, expectations and aims of the session
  • What is Disability – visible and hidden?
  • The impact of Disability Discrimination
  • Communication Skills
    Thought-provoking exercises to highlight the difficulties and emotions disabled people face on a daily basis, with discussion time and practical solutions. Also to identify appropriate language and behaviour.
  • Understanding Access Issues
    Group exercises highlighting both the difficulties and solutions using true scenarios tailor-made to suit the audience.
  • Raising Sensory Loss Awareness
    Group exercises highlighting problems encountered by people who are visually and/or hearing impaired, Blind or Deaf, with practical advice.
  • The Disability Discrimination Act (1995)
    Not in-depth legislation, but how it affects people on a day to day basis – what it means to people and what considerations and improvements have to be made to prevent discriminatory situations.

Training Methods

A good variety of training techniques are used throughout the course to engage delegates in participation, hold attention, aid learning and encourage implementation outside the course environment.

Attendance certificates for all participants will also be issued after the course.
