Interpreter Policy

Living Options Devon believes in a fully accessible society where all people can enjoy freedom of choice and equality of opportunity.  We operate a culture of open communication, empowerment and development, where individual differences and abilities are respected and people are encouraged to achieve their full potential.

We strive to be user-led in all that we do, enabling disabled and Deaf people to influence and manage our full range of services and operations.  We expect to deliver the highest standards of service to all the people with whom we work

To ensure that Deaf people, whose first language is British Sign Language (BSL) can participate fully and make an active and equal contribution, Living Options Devon is committed to providing registered interpreters on all occasions when Deaf people are involved in our work and activities.

There is a national shortage of registered interpreters in the UK and the shortage in Devon is severe.  Living Options Devon believes that Deaf people should not suffer disadvantage by this shortage. The use of unqualified BSL interpreters is not a satisfactory method of communication and denies Deaf people informed choice and equal participation in our services and operations.

Our procedures for booking interpreter services have been designed to take account of the shortage of registered interpreters in Devon without compromising the service provided.  Our staff will be trained to work effectively with Deaf people and interpreters to maximise communication.

Within our strategic aims is a commitment to sharing good practice with organisations inside and outside the County, and to be viewed as an expert in our field.  We will actively promote the adoption of an Interpreter Policy to all agencies, partners and service providers with whom we work.
