Supporting people with recruiting Personal Assistants and promoting person-centred approaches

Devon Personal Assistant Bank
A Personal Assistant (sometimes called a PA or support worker) is someone who is employed to help an individual live independently and do the things they want to do. This could involve: personal care, cooking, cleaning, driving to appointments and companionship. The key skills needed for being a PA are the ability to listen, be flexible and a willingness to learn and respond. The Personal Assistant Bank is an online service bringing PAs and people looking to employ PAs (individual employers) together. The service enables you to search through a list of PAs in Devon and advertise vacancies. We also offer further support with the recruitment and employment of PAs. For further details, click here.

My Future, My Way: Promoting person-centred approaches
My Future, My Way is a project funded by the Department of Health’s Health and Social Care Volunteering fund. The project lead and a small team of volunteers received training about person-centred planning from the charity ‘In Control’. The volunteers will be supported to deliver free training sessions across Devon in order to pass on their knowledge and skills about person-centred planning. The aim is for people attending the training sessions to learn how to develop a person-centred plan, either for themselves, or so they can help someone they care for to develop a plan. The volunteers will also be supported to attend groups and meetings to share their experiences of being a carer or service user in Devon, to highlight how personalisation makes a difference to people’s lives. For further information about the project, or for details of the training sessions, please contact Emma Young on 01392 459 222 or email emma.young@livingoptions.org.

Dream it, plan it, do it!
We want to inspire people to create their own person-centred plans, where they can capture their needs and dreams. You may already know what you want to achieve, or you may want the opportunity to think about what it is really important to you, or what your dream life would include. The My Future, My Way volunteers will pass on their knowledge about a variety of methods you can use to help to create a person-centred plan. This will take place over a series of 2 free sessions. The sessions are aimed at anyone with a disability who wants to learn how to develop a person-centred plan for themselves, or for carers/family members who would like to find out how they would be able to work with someone to develop a person-centred plan. Please contact us to book a place. If you are interested in the sessions but are unable to attend on those dates, please let us know and we will keep you updated about future sessions.

About Us

Living Options Devon is a well respected user-led organisation which works to ensure that people with disabilities and Deaf people can live the life they choose.

Set up in 1990 LOD is a registered charity (Charity N0. 1102489) and a company limited by guarantee (No. 4925281). Based in Exeter and Barnstaple, our charitable aims mean we we can offer services across the South West and share good practice throughout the UK.

Being led and run by people with disabilities and Deaf people ensures LOD has first hand knowledge and understanding of the issues facing service users and so is very well placed to increase the influence and voice of Deaf and disabled people. We do this by providing education, training and services which enable people to live the lives they choose.
