Peter Swain OBE

Published 21st June 2021, in News & Updates

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our founder Peter Swain OBE.

Peter founded Living Options Devon in 1990, following his own experiences with disability, and after establishing Exeter City Council for Independent Living in 1982 and being appointed the Exeter Health Authority.

Peter was Chair of the Board for many years, and more recently our Deputy Chair of Trustees. He was an inspiration to all that met and worked with him.  His energy, insight, and vision steered our charity to implement a range of support services to empower disabled people and members of the Deaf community across the south west to live more independently.  Peter received an OBE in 1996 for services to the development of health, social care, and voluntary sector.

We will continue to ensure Peter’s legacy to facilitate opportunities for disabled people to have their voice heard and to raise awareness on the things that matter most to disabled people and members of the Deaf Community continues.

In time we will mark Peter’s passing with a celebration of his life, but for now, we remember a man who did so much to improve the lives of disabled people.
