Deaf Get Active and Volunteer

Get Active with us or support others to get into sport through volunteering.

Tennis players

We are here to support your health and wellbeing, having an active body and a healthy mind. Now more than ever we are encouraging you to stay active! It may be walking the dog, going for a run, boxing, yoga, or meditation.

We aim to bridge communication and communities, inspiring everyone in Devon to volunteer, communicate and get active and have partnered together with Active Devon and Sport England, to provide you with motivational activities across a range of sports and communities.

We welcome Deaf and Non-Deaf People

The project welcomes enthusiastic Deaf and Non-Deaf people to help get more Deaf people active.

By volunteering, you get to learn new skills, encourage others and try something new. There are lots of different volunteering roles. These include:

  • Activity Champions
  • Coaches/buddies
  • Social media support
  • Filming BSL (British Sign Language) videos
  • Steering Group meeting representatives

We love to see how you are keeping positive and moving, why not share what you are doing with us and help us motivate our followers. Send us your photos, videos or email/message us telling us what you have been up to, or tag us using the hashtag #DeafGetActive

“Definitely feeling more fit and healthy and enjoy it being Deaf-friendly. Nice sense of community and friendship in this group.”

Member of the Deaf Community?

Due to current restrictions, we have had to put our face-to-face activities, such as Deaf tennis, badminton, and netball on hold.  However, in the summer of 2020, we teamed up with Park Yoga and delivered yoga sessions in BSL on our Facebook page.  You can still view these sessions and take part by visiting our YouTube page.

Accessible Fitness Activities

We share a vast range of accessible fitness activities, either subtitled and / or in BSL for both Deaf and non deaf people who may also have a disability or long term health condition.  These can all be viewed on our YouTube page and we regularly share fitness sessions on our Facebook.

Contact Mark Cunliffe Our Deaf Engagement Worker, mark.cunliffe@livingoptions.org for more information.

Couch to 5K and Strive for 5

Our Living Options Devon Keep Active team has joined forces with Deaf Get Active and have launched their own accessible Couch to 5K and Strive for 5 fitness programs, each video is translated into BSL and is subtitled.  The get active and keep active teams offer advice, top tips, support and encouragement on doing 5K Your Way.  Find out more here.
