The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Events in Devon

On 2nd June 2022, the country and Commonwealth will celebrate another unique milestone in our history, Her Majesty The Queen’s 70th year as our Queen and Head of the Commonwealth – her Platinum Jubilee. 

With the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee nearly upon us, we thought we’d highlight some of the celebration events that are taking place this week.

The extended bank holiday is from the 2nd to the 5th of June. Many events are happening which you may be interested in.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons

On the 2nd of June more than 2,022 beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, and one in each of the capital cities of Commonwealth countries in recognition of The Queen’s service.

At 2 pm GMT local town criers will announce the lighting of fire beacons later that evening. At 9.35 pm across the country and Commonwealth, individual pipers and pipe bands will play “Diu Regnare”. At 9.40 pm a unique Bugle Call will be played called ‘Majesty’ to announce the lighting of the beacons at 9.45 pm.

The Queen’s Green Canopy

The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree-planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. People from across the UK are invited to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and corporates are invited to plant a tree. The aim is to enhance our environment by planting trees during the official planting season between October to March. Tree planting will commence again in October 2022, through to the end of the Jubilee year.

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service. 

Local organisations such as Devon County CouncilThe Lord-Lieutenant of Devonand East Devon District Council are taking part.

The Big Jubilee Lunch

The Eden Project Cornwall is inviting people across the UK to come together for The Big Jubilee Lunch as part of the official celebrations for Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee!

Whether it’s sharing a cuppa with a neighbour on the doorstep or a bigger bash in the street, they are encouraging people across the UK to share friendship, food and fun with The Big Jubilee Lunch.
