Purple Tuesday - Improving the customer experience for disabled people
Tuesday, 3 November, 2020
Today (Tuesday 3rd November) is Purple Tuesday. We are raising awareness of this important day by remembering last year’s Purple Tuesday and our involvement with Princesshay.

Purple Tuesday is a change programme for organisations of all sizes from all sectors to get involved in, with the common goal of improving the customer experience for disabled people not just for one day but throughout the whole year.  Purple Tuesday is about creating a step change improvement in the awareness of the value and needs of disabled customers. It is about making the customer experience accessible.

In the UK alone, the Purple Pound, the spending power of disabled people and their families, is worth a staggering £274 billion and is estimated to be rising by 14% per year, yet less than 10% of organisations have a targeted plan to access the disability market. This is not only a huge frustration for disabled people, but is also a missed opportunity for organisations who could be benefiting both socially and commercially by accessing the disability market.

Last year Living Options Devon was Princesshay’s charity of the year and as part of this we supported the shopping centre and it’s individual outlets in making at least one new commitment to improve the customer experience for disabled people. We provided feedback and recommendations on their Changing Places toilet, and we worked together with Princesshay to provide a Visual Guide for the shopping centre. On the day we hosted a stand at Debenhams where our friendly team were on hand to answer questions about Purple Tuesday and raise awareness about the importance of the day, giving retailers advice and tips on how to improve the shopping experience for disabled and Deaf people

This Year Purple Tuesday 2020 - Our Commitment

Although we haven't teamed up with an individual shopping outlet this year, we continue to raise awarness and support and consult with a diverse range of organisations throughout the year to review and improve their accessibility, not just physical access of buildings, toilets and car parks but also disability awareness and Deaf awareness training with staff and colleagues.

We work across the South West delivering access audits, Deaf awareness training, disability equality training, disability and diversity consultancy and specific high quality courses to a variety of voluntary, public and private organisations. We have worked with a range of clients including The Environment Agency, Exeter International Airport, Devon County Council, The Learning and Skills Council, the Police and Fire services, the Royal Albert Museum and Dartmoor National Park Authority.

The most beneficial aspect of our service is that it is delivered by disabled people who on a day to day basis face issues to do with accessibility and lack of awareness, making them the best people to be able to advice on the subject of disability linked issues.  We also have qualified and experienced auditors who are able to complete comprehensive access audits on buildings, sites and open spaces.

To speak to someone about our access audits and consultancy and training service for organisations looking to improve their accessibility please call us 01392 459 222 or email info@livingoptions.org - We look forward to working with you.

About Us

Living Options Devon is a well respected user-led organisation which works to ensure that people with disabilities and Deaf people can live the life they choose. Set up in 1990 LOD is a registered charity (Charity N0. 1102489) and a company limited by guarantee (No. 4925281). Based in Exeter and Barnstaple, our charitable aims mean we we can offer services across the South West and share good practice throughout the UK. Being led and run by people with disabilities and Deaf people ensures LOD has first hand knowledge and understanding of the issues facing service users and so is very well placed to increase the influence and voice of Deaf and disabled people. We do this by providing education, training and services which enable people to live the lives they choose.
